FRAMING & CANVAS CHECK LIST

PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION BEFORE YOU HAND IN YOUR EXHIBITS.

UNSATISFACTORY PRESENTATION COULD RESULT IN YOUR WORK BEING REJECTED.

Your work is for sale to the general public. It is important for the framing to be satisfactory. Remember poor framing can harm and disappoint the Purchaser.

FRAMED PAINTINGS
Framing should be in good condition.
Distressed gold mouldings should obviously be so. Not old frames with gold paint in poor condition
Check all mitres (corners) are tight together and undamaged.
Paintings must be secure in their frames. All glazed work should be secured with panel pins, glazier's diamonds or metal points.
Do not use non-reflected glass. It is very fragile.
Clean glass both sides and remove previous exhibition labels.
Backing board should be 1.8mm or 2mm hardboard, MDF or thick brown cardboard.
ONLY use Brown Gum Strip or Framers self-dhesive Tape to seal the backing board.
Use screw eyes or D rings, not cup hooks. These should be placed one third of the way down the sides of the frame or, in the case of D rings, into the back of the board.
Any painting with one hook, placed centrally in the top of frame or centrally in the backing will be rejected as it renders the painting unsafe for hanging.
Nylon cord or strong white string is preferred for hanging. Picture wire is acceptable providing the wire ends are crimped or covered with masking tape. Coloured string is not acceptable.
Frame Kits are not acceptable. These tend to fall apart and are unsafe.

CANVAS PAINTINGS
Paintings on canvas must be taught on their stretchers with the corner wedges tight and hammered in. Please check the frame is strong enough for the total weight of the assembled picture and that it does not bow when hung. A large painting can be dangerous to hang. Please ensure adequate care is taken with correct framing for its weight & size.
Paintings on Canvas with studding along the sides must be framed.
3D canvasses (Box Canvas) may be used. Great care must be taken with finishing the edge of painting if the sides are left blank.

PORTFOLIOS
The presentation of portfolios must be of a good standard. Portfolios must be covered with acetate film.

The Committee hope these guide lines will help all members, especially first time exhibitors.
